The Vembanad Lake is the biggest Ramsar Site in India after the Sundarbans and this water body suffers serious infestation of the invasive water weed – water hyacinth – which is a Macrophyte. Playing on this word to get a title, PlanatEarth has launched a project called Vembanad’s Macro Fight. This project focuses on the manual as well as mechanical removal of the water weed. Once it is harvested it is died, powdered and mixed with enriching biomass to make biomass briquettes. This project is funded by the HCL Foundation and has a Public-Private-Participatory model with involvement of the government departments and communities.
