MARC: Mangrove Restoration & Conservation – A Sustainable Integral Approach
Mangroves are essential to coastal ecosystems, supporting a variety of marine life, preventing coastal erosion, and improving the overall health of the ecosystem. The coastal areas of Vypin, encompassing Pallipuram, Kadamakudy, Kuzhuppilly, and Njarackal Panchayaths in Ernakulam, Kochi, are set to benefit from the ‘MARC: Mangrove Restoration & Conservation’ project. This initiative, funded by Hindustan Port Private Limited, a subsidiary of DP WORLD Dubai, under their CSR funding, will be implemented by PlanAtearth NGO Kerala under the guidance of MLA Vypeen Shri K N Unnikrishnan.
Project Components
- Apiculture Training and Apiary Setup: Training local communities in beekeeping to promote sustainable livelihoods and enhance local biodiversity.
- Value-Added Products Development: Creating marketable products from mangrove resources, such as honey, to provide additional income streams for local families.
- Kiosk Opening: Establishing kiosks to sell eco-friendly products, raising awareness about mangrove conservation and supporting local artisans.
- Meals on Wheels: A community-driven initiative to provide nutritious meals made from locally sourced ingredients, fostering community health and well-being.
- Eco-Tourism and Kayaking: Promoting eco-tourism through guided kayaking tours, allowing visitors to experience the unique mangrove ecosystems and learn about conservation efforts.
- Pokkali Farming: Reviving traditional Pokkali farming methods, which are environmentally friendly and sustainable, to support local agriculture.
- Women Empowerment through Mangrove Plantation: Encouraging women to take active roles in mangrove plantation and conservation, providing them with skills and opportunities for economic independence.
Project Significance
Project ‘MARC’ adopts a multifaceted approach that integrates conservation, restoration, and the creation of sustainable livelihoods, particularly focusing on women’s empowerment. This initiative gains a global perspective with the support of DP World Dubai, underscoring the importance of collaboration in building a resilient and sustainable future for coastal communities.
