Earth Day, 22 April 2024

In 2024, World Earth Day rallies around the theme “Planet vs Plastic,” urging global action against the pervasive menace of plastic pollution. It emphasizes how important it is to cut back on single use plastics, develop sustainable substitutes, and improve recycling facilities. With the theme of World Earth Day in mind, Planatearth NGO gathered kids and teachers from Global Public School to participate in a beach clean-up at Kuzhuppilly, Kerala, as part of their DROP (Drive to Recover Ocean Plastic) Project, funded by the HCL Foundation. In an effort to promote awareness for future generations, thirty students and four teachers from the Global Public School took part in the beach cleanup. The occasion, which took place on April 22, 2024, highlighted the need to combat plastic pollution in oceans and demonstrated the community’s commitment to environmental preservation. In the calm of the beach, volunteers from Global Public School and Planatearth NGO diligently collaborated to search the shoreline for plastic debris. Equipped with gloves and sacks for collecting trash, they sorted through the dunes with care, gathering items that endangered ecosystems and marine life. The eager participants’ cooperative efforts paid off as they collected an amazing 70 plastic garbage sacs, or about 540 kg, demonstrating the gravity of the problem and the urgent need for action. The volunteers used the gathered plastic debris to create an eye-catching sand sculpture that illustrates the dangers of ocean plastic pollution and the importance of protecting marine areas in an innovative attempt to spread this message.
